Varendra Research Museum located in the heart of Rajshahi city is the first museum of Bangladesh. And in the list of archeological collections Barendra Museum is one of South Asia. In 1910 Sarat Kumar Roy, zamidar of Dighapatia, Natore, Akshay Kumar Maitra, a lawyer and Ram Prasad Chandra, a teacher of Rajshahi Collegiate School, formed the Varendra Search Society for the collection and preservation of Bengal’s traditional artefacts and collected 32 rare artefacts. Later in 1913 Varendra Research Museum started its journey in its own building.
The existence of Varendra Research Museum has faced various crises at various times. From 1949 to 1961, half of Barendra Museum was used as a medical school. In 1964, when the museum was about to close again, Rajshahi University took over the Varendra Research Museum. Apart from Mahatma Gandhi, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, various famous personalities have visited Varendra Research Museum.
Artifacts of Varendra Museum:
Varendra Museum has more than 9 thousand artefacts. The collection of the museum includes artifacts of the Indus civilization, artifacts of the Mohenjodaro civilization, stone statues, 11th century Buddha statues, Bhairava’s head, Ganga statues, Mughal period silver coins, Gupta Emperor Chandragupta round gold coins, Emperor Shah Jahan round silver coins etc.
