Bangabandhu’s mausoleum

The mausoleum of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the greatest Bengali of all time, is located in Tungipara village, just 19 km from Gopalganj district headquarters. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was born on March 17, 1920 in Tungipara village. And on August 15, 1975, Bangabandhu’s illustrious life ended with an assassin’s bullet. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s body was buried in the family graveyard next to the graves of his parents.
In 1996, the then Awami League government accepted the plan to construct Bangabandhu’s mausoleum complex in Tungipara. On March 17, 1999, former President Justice Sahabuddin Ahmed laid the foundation stone of this mausoleum. On January 10, 2001, Bangabandhu’s daughter, then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated this mausoleum. Under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture, the Bangabandhu Tomb was constructed by the Department of Archeology on about 39 acres of land on the banks of the Baigar River.
The red ceramic bricks and black and white tiles have become symbols of pain with a touch of Greek architecture. Bangabandhu’s grave can be seen after crossing the front garden of the complex. Next to Bangabandhu’s grave are the graves of his father Sheikh Lutfar Rahman and mother Saira Khatun. And the main tomb has been built around these three graves.
Above the mausoleum is a round dome made of white stone. The walls of the dome are jafari-cut, and it is through this jafari cut that the sunlight enters the mausoleum and spreads around through the glasswork.
Bangabandhu Samadhi Soudh complex includes mosque, library, public plaza, administrative building, research center,
Exhibition Centre, Cafeteria, Bakultala Square, Open Stage, Souvenir Corner, Flower Garden and Artificial Hill.
