history
About two hundred years ago, an English indigo maker named Dunlop built this indigo house on 12 acres of land. Then the farmers were forced to leave other crops and cultivate indigo. At one time, the Neel Kuthial and their friends took extreme forms in the tyranny of the Zamindar-Mahajans. Then Haji Shariatullah and his son Pir Mohsinuddin Dudumiya of Bahadurpur village of Shibchar upazila formed resistance against the Neel Kuthials. This protest to protect the rights of farmers turned into a mass movement.
After the death of Haji Shariatullah, war broke out with the British in 1738 under the leadership of Dudumiya. In that battle, Neelkuthial Dunlop defeated his party and fled from Neelkuthi. The site of the 1738 battle is known as ‘Rankhola’ to the locals.
