Sher-e-Bangla Memorial Museum (Sher-e-Bangla Memorial Museum) has been built over 27 acres of Sher Bangla AK Fazlul Haque’s residence in Chakhar Union of Banaripara Upazila, 24 km away from Barisal district. The museum is known as Chakha Archaeological Museum to locals. AK Fazlul Haque, the Chief Minister of undivided Bengal and the unforgettable leader of Sher Bengal came to Barisal in 1901 to practice law in the Calcutta High Court after the death of his father. Apart from legal business, he looked after Chakhar’s zamindari. This museum was built in 1983 under the Directorate of Cultural Affairs to present the history and memory of Sher Bangla AK Fazlul Haque to the new generation.
At the end of the five-room Bangla Memorial Museum there are three exhibition rooms, an office room, a restroom and a library. On the left side of the museum there is a large portrait of Shere Bangla and next to it a brief history of life work, social, political and family photos and various features and photos of Shere Bangla Fazlul Haque published in newspapers and magazines. Shere Bangla Memorial Museum also has rare photographs, used furniture, letters, mummies of crocodiles hunted in Sundarbans, octagonal Marichi Devi idol, black stone Shiva linga, bronze Buddhist idol, gold coins, small stone Shiva linga idol, silver coins, Sri Lankan, British and Sultanate period. Copper coins and various archaeological artefacts. Currently under the Directorate of Archaeology, this museum receives a large number of visitors every day.
Museum entry fee and schedule
Sher Bangla Memorial Museum is open during summer from 10 am to 6 pm and during winter from 9 am to 5 pm. And it is closed daily from 1 pm to 1.30 pm for a temporary break. Museum weekends are Sundays and half days on Fridays and Mondays. Apart from this, the Shere Bangla Memorial Museum is closed on various non-official holidays.
Sher Bangla Memorial Museum entry ticket price is Tk 10 per person and Tk 5 for children. And children below 5 years have free entry. Besides, the entry fee for visitors from SAARC countries is Tk 25 and for other foreign visitors the entry fee is Tk 100 per person.
How to go
Barisal can be reached from Dhaka by road, sea and air. From Gabtali and Syedabad in Dhaka, Hanif Enterprise, Labiba Enterprise, Imperial Classic, Ena Transport, Digant Paribahan, Sohag Paribahan, Eagle Transport, Shakura Paribahan and BRTC buses can reach Barisal via Padma Setu. By sea, Barisal can be reached from Sadarghat in Dhaka by Manami, Adventure, Sundarban, Surabhi, Parabat, Kirtankhola and Green Line launches. Besides, domestic airlines can go to Barisal from Hazrat Shah Jalal International Airport. Arriving in Barisal city and reaching Chakhar Am by local bus, you can visit Shere Bangla Memorial Museum.
