Durga Sagar is located at Madhavpasha on Swarupkathi Barisal road just 12 km from Barisal city. In 1780 AD, the then king Shiva Narayan dug a large lake in Madhavpasha to solve the water shortage of the local people and named the lake Durgasagar after his mother Durga Devi. The wetland area of this historic lake is 27 acres and the total area including banks and land is 45.42 acres. At present, the district administration is performing the responsibility of maintaining Durgasagar Dighi. There are 3 Ghatlas on three sides of the Durgasagar Dighi and a Tila or small island in the middle of the Dighi. This Durga Sagar is also widely known as Madhobpasha Dighi to the locals.
There is a large embanked ghat on the northern side of the Dighi surrounded by coconut, betel nut, shishu, mahogany trees. You can visit Durgasagar Dighi at any time of the year, but during winter, the Durgasagar is visited by flocks of guest birds. Thousands of birds of about 6 species, including cranes and sandpipers, are swarming around. A large number of people come to see the beauty of the traditional Durgasagar Dighi, which is about two and a half years old.
How to go
To see Durgasagar Dighi first you need to come to Barisal city. If you take a bus going from Barisal to Chakhar, you can get down right in front of Durgasagar Lake. Apart from this, the battery operated Laguna Durga Sagar leaves for Dighi from the launch ghat. If you want, you can reserve a CNG or an autorickshaw from Durgasagar.
