Cheragi Pahar is a famous place as a place of art, culture and literary practice in Chittagong district. Cheragi Square is located at the junction of Momin Road and Jamal Khan Road adjacent to DC Hill (present Nazrul Square). This place, well known as Cheragi Mor, becomes lively with the movement and chat of creative people of various professions such as poets, writers, artists, journalists, readers, organizers, political activists etc.
It is said that Sufi saint Hazrat Badr Auliya (RA) came to Chittagong by climbing a rock floating in the sea from Arabia to preach Islam. When Hazrat Badr Auliya (R.A.) ascended a mountain in Chittagong full of uninhabited mountains with a miraculous torch, the jinns stopped him. But the jinn fairies asked him to leave this place. Hazrat Badr Auliya (R.A.) left the mountain in exchange for the jinn fairies only keeping his lamp. After that, the jinns could not bear the intense radiation of his miraculous lamp and left Chittagong. After that, human settlement gradually developed here and this hill came to be known as Cheragi Hill.
Although there is no mountain called Cheragi Pahar at present, various traditional institutions have been built around this place. A cheragh-shaped monument has been erected at Cheragi Mor (junction of three roads). And this monument is now called Cheragi Pahar.
