Birshrestha Hamidur Rahman Memorial

Bir Shrestho Hamidur Rahman Monument is located in Dhlai tea garden bordering Kamalganj upazila of Moulvibazar district. Hamidur Rahman, born in Jhenaidah, was a brave sepoy of the Bangladesh Army. Hamidur Rahman was fighting in Srimangal area of ​​Sylhet in October 1971. On the morning of 28 October, Hamidur Rahman Dhalli, on the orders of the team captain, advanced to capture the Pakistani base at BOP. Risking his life with a light machine gun, Hamidur Rahman single-handedly destroyed two Pakistani battle tanks. The captain of Shatrughat and several soldiers were killed in this. Once while fighting, this brave son was shot in the enemy’s counter attack and fell to his death. Within days of his sacrifice, the border outpost of Dhali came under the control of the freedom fighters. Fellow fighters took Hamidur Rahman’s body across the border and buried it next to a mosque in Ambasa village, India.
After 36 years, in 2005, his mortal remains were brought to Bangladesh from Ambasa village in Tripura state, India. On December 11, 2007, his remains were buried at the Mirpur Intellectual Cemetery in Dhaka. Sepahi Hamidur Rahman was posthumously awarded the Bir Shrestha title for his immense bravery. In honor of this great hero, a memorial has been constructed at Dhalai Tea Garden, about 22 km from Srimangal. And Bir Shresh Shaheed Hamidur Rahman memorial museum and library has been constructed in the college grounds in the village of Bir Shresh Hamidur Rahman in Jhenaidah. Every year on October 28, the local administration of Moulvibazar organizes various programs on the occasion of the martyrdom anniversary of Hamidur Rahman. Also, numerous tourists and visitors from different parts of the country come to pay their respects at the memorial of Bir Shrestha

How to go

If you want to visit Birshrestha Hamidur Rahman’s memorial, you have to come to Srimangal Upazila of Moulvibazar district. Srimangal can be reached directly from Dhaka by road and rail. From Dhaka’s Fakirapur or Syedabad, Srimangal can be reached by various transport buses including Hanif, Shyamoli, Ena and Sylhet Paribahan. Besides, Srimangal can also be reached by Jayantika, Upaban or Parabat Express trains from Kamalapur railway station to Sylhet. From Srimangal city, you can take local transport (CNG, bus) to Kamalganj or Kamalganj and go to Hamidur Rahman Memorial.
