Sri Sri Kal Bhairab Temple located in Brahmanbaria district is the name of a historical structure. The location of this pilgrimage site is one of the 300-year-old Hindu communities in the Medor area of Brahmanbaria city near Titus River. The main attraction of this temple is the idol of Hindu deity Sri Sri Kalbhairava. Built-in 1905, the 28-foot tall Kalabhairava or Shiva idol is considered to be the tallest idol in the Indian subcontinent. The giant statue has Kali on the right and Goddess Parvati on the left. The famous zamindar of Sarail Noor Mohammad Kalbhairab donated the land for the temple.
According to tradition, Kasishwar Devadidev Mahadev created Kalbhairava from his own body and made him the head of guarding Kashidham. After the appearance of Sri Sri Kalbhairava, the local Durgacharan Acharya made a huge vigraha (image) of Kalabhairava out of clay as per the instructions received in a dream. Since its construction, puja-archana has been performed regularly till 1971 with the help of local devotees. Kalbhairab’s idol was damaged by Pak invading forces during the Great War of Liberation. Later Dr. With the help of Mahanambrata Brahmachari Maharaj and the local people, the 28 feet high Sri Sri Kalbhairava idol and temple were re-established.
In a separate building on the left side of the Sri Sri Kalbhairava Temple is the 105-year-old Sri Sri Kailashweshwar Shivlinga made of hard stone weighing 11 kg. Sri Sri Kalbhairava Vigraha the oldest temple has Goddess Parvati, Sri Sri Kailashweshwara Shivlinga, Kali Murthy, Durga Mandir, Saraswati Devi, Sri Sri Kalbhairava Natmandir, and two Mutts.
Every year on the Falguni Shukla Saptami Tithi of Bengal, 4 days four-day-long puja, home yajna, and fair are organized here to celebrate the foundation anniversary. At that time, the premises of Kalbhairava Temple became crowded with pilgrims, devotees, and visitors from different countries including Sri Lanka, India, Maldives, and China.
How to go
From Dhaka’s Sayedabad or Jatrabari, one can take a bus plying on the Brahmanbaria route to Bishwa Road in Brahmanbaria’s Sarail Upazila. You can go to Kalbhairav temple located in the Mesta area by local transport like rickshaw or CNG from Sarail Bishwaroad.
It is best to take the Chittagong bound train from Dhaka directly to Brahmanbaria railway station. The fare of the train ticket will be Tk 145 to Tk 489 per person depending on the class. You can get local transport to the temple from Brahmanbaria railway station.
