Adamjee Jute Mills located in Sumilpara, Siddhirganj, Narayanganj district was once known as the 2nd largest jute mill in East Pakistan. In the past this jute mill was also called the Dundee of the East. In 1950, Adamji Jute Mills was established on the banks of the Shitalakshya river in Narayanganj in a joint venture of three brothers of the then wealthy Adamji family of Pakistan. The next year of establishment i.e. on 12 December 1951, the jute mill started commercial production with 1700 hessian and 1000 seeking looms. Later after Adamji Jute Mills Limited divested its share, about 3,300 looms were installed here.
The golden era of Adamji Jute Mills began in 1970 when jute products started to be used as an alternative to plastic and polythene. At that time, the production of this mill earned 60 crore rupees every year in foreign exchange. After independence, this jute mill was nationalized in 1971. Adamjee Jute Mill produced various types of high quality jute products including chat, carpets and exported to different countries to meet the needs of the country.
The jute mill was shut down on June 30, 2002 due to various complications and continued losses. Adamjee Export Processing Zone or Adamjee EPZ was set up on 6 March 2006 at Units 1 and 2 of Adamjee Jute Mills. At present, water treatment plant, own power plant for electricity and an 11 KV substation have been set up in this EPZ. In addition, a large population has developed in Siddhirganj, Bandar and Sonargaon on both banks of Shitalakshya around Adamji.
How to go
You can go to Narayanganj by bus or train from Dhaka. If you get off at the EPZ bus stand in Narayanganj by bus like Doel, Swadesh and Borak from Gulisthan in Dhaka, you can reach the Adamji Jute Mill located in the Adamji area or the present Adamji EPZ on foot.
