Ali Amjader Ghari, located on the banks of the Surma River, is an important 19th-century structure in Sylhet. Ali Ahmad Khan, the zamindar of Prithimpasa of Kulaura, Sylhet, built this historic clock house in 1874 AD next to Keen Bridge. The watch came to be known as Ali Amjad’s watch after Ali Ahmad Khan’s son. Ali Amjad’s huge domed clock house made of corrugated metal on iron poles is 26 feet high. And the length of the clock is 9 feet 8 inches and the width is 8 feet 10 inches.
This ancient watch house was damaged in the liberation war of 1971. The watch has since been refurbished at various times. Ali Amjad’s clock is currently functioning after being repaired by the Sylhet City Corporation in 2011.
How to go
From anywhere in Sylhet city, one can easily visit Ali Amjad Clock near Keen Bridge by CNG, rickshaw or auto rickshaw. Ali Amzad Ghari is just 1 km away from Sylhet Railway Station and Kadmatli Central Bus Terminal. If you want, you can go to Ali Amzad’s Clock via Keen Bridge on foot.
Dhaka to Sylhet: Buses to Sylhet leave from Gabtali and Syedabad bus terminals in Dhaka. Green Line, Saudia, S Alam, Shyamli and Ena Paribahan AC buses ply from Fakirapool, Syedabad and Mohakhali bus stations, fares usually between Tk 1400 to Tk 1500. Also, non-AC buses of Shyamoli, Hanif, Unique, Ena Paribahan will be available for 680 to 700 taka per person from Dhaka to Sylhet.
From Dhaka to Sylhet by train, you can choose Upaban, Jayantika, Parabat or Kalni Express train from Kamalapur or Biman Bandar railway station. Train fare will be 375 to 1288 taka depending on the class.
