Auliapur Neelkuthi

Auliapur Nilkuthi, a witness of the historical Faraji movement, is also known as Madaripur Dunlop Nilkuthi to the people of Madaripur region. Auliapur Nilkuthi seems to carry on the exploitation of the British indigo miners on the poor farmers and the era. Auliapur Nilkuthir is located in Auliapur village of Shircharchar union. The distance of this Nilkuthir from Madaripur district town is only 10 km. The Nilkuthi is next to the Dargah Sharif of Hazrat Shah Sufi Khwaja Yusuf Shah Ahsan, the famous Auliya of Auliyapur blessed with the touch of Pir-Auliya. The 12-room Auliapur Nilkuthir has a hearth in the middle and a chimney about 40 feet high. Although the land of Neelkuthira, which is now almost extinct, has also been barren in various ways.

About two hundred years ago, an English indigo maker named Dunlop built this indigo house on 12 acres of land. Then the farmers were forced to leave other crops and cultivate indigo. At one time, the Neel Kuthial and their friends took extreme forms in the tyranny of the Zamindar-Mahajans. Then Haji Shariatullah and his son Pir Mohsinuddin Dudumiya of Bahadurpur village of Shibchar upazila formed resistance against the Neel Kuthials. This protest to protect the rights of farmers turned into a mass movement.
After the death of Haji Shariatullah, war broke out with the British in 1738 under the leadership of Dudumiya. In that battle, Neelkuthial Dunlop defeated his party and fled from Neelkuthi. The site of the 1738 battle is known as ‘Rankhola’ to the locals.

How to go

Madaripur-bound buses ply from the other side of the bridge at Gabtali, Sayedabad and Keraniganj’s Naya Bazar in the capital Dhaka via the Padma multi-purpose bridge. The fare of these non-AC buses will be Tk 350-400. Besides, you can take any bus from Gabtali to Barisal and get down at Mustafapur and take a bus or auto rickshaw to Madaripur Sadar. Autorickshaws, CNG are available from Madaripur to Auliapur Nilkuthi.
