Gokul Medh

Gokul Medh is an archeological monument located in Gokul village of Bogra Sadar. Located just one and a half kilometers south of Mahasthangarh, this place is popularly known as Lakhindar Behular Basar Ghar. Many have also called it the name of Lakshishar Medha. Excavations carried out by NG Majumdar from 1934-36 uncovered the foundations of a temple here. The 172 kuthuris were filled with earth at different levels and gradually decreasing from the bottom to the top, the main foundation was arranged in a layer-by-layer upward kuthuri construction style to serve as the foundation of a towering temple or stupa. Some terracotta plaques of the Gupta era i.e. sixth-seventh centuries are found in this temple. Later in the Sena period a temple was built at Gokul Medha. A gold leaf from Mompira is believed to have belonged to a Shiv Mumpiri.
Behula’s Basarghar or Gokul Medh is a remarkable structure. Which is a Vaidyamath built by Devapala between 809 and 847 AD. In the western half of the main stupa there is a memorial of a traditional residence. In the eastern half there is a bathing place which looks like a cub with 24 corners.
