There are several folk tales in this region about Khelaram Data of Nawabganj, Dhaka district. It is known that Khelaram Data was a dacoit chief. He was also widely known as a famous philanthropist. He helped the poor people without hesitation.
There was a tunnel from Khelaram Datar’s house to Ichamati river. And it is said that he used to bring the looted wealth home through this tunnel. Khelaram Datar’s house has been renovated and access to the tunnel is prohibited. As a result, currently the house cannot be entered, Khelaram Data House and temple (Khelaram Data Temple) can only be visited from outside.
There is a huge pond next to Khelaram Data’s house. Legend has it that Khelaram Datha jumped into this pond to save his mother and never came up again.
How to go
Bandura can be directly reached by bus from Gulisthan in Dhaka. Or come to Doha through Babubazar Bridge of Dhaka or Shaheed Buddhijibi Bridge (3rd Buriganga Bridge) and reach Kalakopa in Nawabganj and take the road from Kalakopa towards Bandura and you will reach Khelaram Data’s house.
