Syedpur in Nilphamari district is one of the ancient cities of Bangladesh. Famous for trade and commerce, Syedpur has become known as the ‘Railway City’ to many as it is home to the largest Railway Workshop in Bangladesh. Built in 1870 on about 110 acres of land, this railway factory does all kinds of work from nut-bolts to railway broad gauge and meter gauge line carriage repairs. A British period narrow gauge engine last used on the Bagerhat-Rupsa section in 1972 is kept in the green space in front of the railway factory office. Apart from the engine built in 1901 by England’s Vulcan Company, several other engines are on display at the Loco Transport Museum of the Saidpur Railway Factory. A large number of students from various institutions flocked to Syedpur Railway Factory for practical knowledge on the educational tour.
