Shokuni Lake is a historical name that carries the identity of Madaripur district. The environment of Shakuni Lake, full of natural beauty, easily soothes the mind. Although known as ‘Shakuni Lake’ in the papers, this lake is popularly known as ‘Madaripur Lake’ among the locals. A few hundred years ago, a king dug Shakuni Lake to relieve the water shortage of his subjects. Which is currently fulfilling the needs of entertainment center for the people of Madaripur. There are watch towers, artificial springs, coffee shops, restaurants and canopies for rest.
As the afternoon progresses, the crowd in this 20 acre lake increases. The people of the city rushed to this Shakuni lake to spend their leisure time with their families. And in the shops near the lake, delicious sweets are available, the fame of which is spread all over Bangladesh. Also, various important facilities of Madaripur district (such as DC office, police station, etc.) have been built near Shakuni Lake.
How to go
Distance from Dhaka to Madaripur by road is 128 km via Padma bridge. There are direct buses from Dhaka’s Gabtali and Keraniganj (across Naya Bazar Bridge) to Madaripur. Sarbik Paribahan, Chandra Paribahan and Sohel Paribahan buses leave for Madaripur from Gabtali bus stand. Various buses ply from Sayedabad Bus Terminal to Madaripur at regular intervals. Try to book a direct bus ticket, ticket price is Tk 350 to Tk 400 per person (variable). It takes about 3 hours to reach Madaripur by bus. You can easily reach Shakuni Lake by taking a rickshaw fare of 20 taka from Madaripur new bus stand.
