Tushbhandar Zamindar House

About four hundred years ago Zamindar Muraridev Ghoshal Bhattacharya established Tushbhander Jaminderbari in Kaliganj of Lalmonirhat district. It is said that in 1634 AD, during the reign of Maharaja Pran Narayan, Muraridev Ghoshal Bhattacharya came to Cooch Behar with a religious issue called Rasik Rai Vigraha from the twenty-four parganas district. In those days land was donated for religious purposes. Maharaja Pran Narayan Ghoshal donated 9 mauzas to Bhattacharya for worshiping the idol. But Ghosal Bhattacharya was a Brahmin so he objected to Maharaja’s donation and he proposed to the king to charge rent on the property. But the king demanded to take rice husk as tribute. As a result paddy husk was collected from the entire zamindari area to be given to the king of Cooch Behar and kept on the east side of the zamindar house. From this incident this zamindar house came to be known as Tushbhandar zamindar house.
